Our Platform.sh review
Platform.sh built its reputation on one killer feature: every Git branch becomes a complete, running clone of production, including databases with real data, in about a minute. For agencies juggling client sites and teams doing serious review-app workflows, that remains the best implementation of the idea anywhere, a decade after it shipped.
The company is now mid-metamorphosis. Its modern product is Upsun, and platform.sh pricing pages today redirect to Upsun's usage-based model: roughly €9 a month per project as a base fee (covering builds, 10 GB of egress and 500,000 requests), €10 per user license, and hourly billing for the containers you actually run, at around €0.033 an hour for shared CPU and €0.013 per GB-hour of RAM. A free trial with monthly credits covers one project without a credit card. Legacy Platform.sh fixed plans still exist for existing customers, but new buyers should evaluate Upsun.
The engineering philosophy is infrastructure-as-YAML: applications, services (Postgres, MySQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ and more), routes and workers are declared in config files, and the platform builds a read-only, reproducible container topology from them. This is more ceremony than Railway's click-to-add canvas, but it means environments never drift and a Git clone is a complete description of production.
The natural habitat is the European CMS and commerce world: Drupal, Symfony, Ibexa, Pimcore, Magento-adjacent stacks, often multi-app and multi-database, where the branch-everything model saves the most pain. Node, Python, Go and the rest are fully supported, but a solo developer with one container will find the project-fee-plus-usage arithmetic lands noticeably above a $7 Render instance for the same horsepower.
Verdict: for complex, multi-service applications and agency fleets, the per-branch environment cloning still justifies the premium and the learning curve. For straightforward apps, simpler and cheaper platforms do the job; and whichever you pick, confirm whether you are buying Platform.sh legacy plans or Upsun usage pricing, because the answer changes the invoice.
