Pros

  • The slickest dashboard in the category: a live canvas of your whole stack
  • One-click templates for Postgres, Redis, MySQL and hundreds of apps
  • True per-second usage billing means idle-ish projects cost near nothing
  • Deploy from GitHub, Dockerfile or plain code with zero config
  • Pro seats are free: $20 covers the whole workspace

Cons

  • Usage pricing needs monitoring; a memory leak literally costs money
  • No permanent generous free tier: $1/mo of credit is a demo, not hosting
  • Fewer regions and no formal SLA below Enterprise

PlanIntro priceRenews atStorageSitesBandwidthNotes
FreeApp Platforms $0/mo $0/mo $1 of usage credit a month; one replica per service and 3-day log retention, enough for a tiny always-on service or bursty demos
HobbyApp Platforms $5/mo $5/mo $5/mo includes $5 of usage; beyond that, RAM bills about $10/GB-month and vCPU about $20/month, prorated by the second. Services can scale to 48 vCPU / 48 GB
ProApp Platforms $20/mo $20/mo $20/mo per workspace with unlimited seats and $20 of usage included; 30-day logs, higher resource ceilings and regional replicas

Our Railway review

Railway's dashboard is the first thing everyone mentions: your project is a live canvas where each service, database and cron job is a node you can click, connect and scale. Spinning up an app with Postgres and Redis takes minutes from a template library covering hundreds of stacks, and every Git push deploys automatically with build logs streaming in real time.

The billing model is pure usage: memory at roughly $10 per GB-month and CPU at roughly $20 per vCPU-month, metered per second, plus $0.05/GB egress. Plans are really just minimum spends with credits attached: Hobby is $5 a month including $5 of usage, Pro is $20 per workspace including $20 of usage with unlimited team seats. An efficient Go service can run all month inside the Hobby credit; a leaky Node app with three replicas will not.

That model is Railway's biggest strength and its sharpest edge. Nothing sleeps, there are no cold starts and vertical scaling is automatic up to your plan's ceiling (48 vCPU and 48 GB per service on Hobby, far higher on Pro). But the meter is always running, and the platform will cheerfully bill you for the memory your bug is consuming. Budget alerts and hard usage limits exist; set them on day one.

The free tier is honest but thin: $1 of monthly credit with services capped at 1 vCPU and 512 MB. That keeps a tiny bot or webhook alive and nothing more; Railway is upfront that free compute attracts abuse and it would rather subsidize builders lightly than host the world's crypto miners.

Compared with Render, Railway trades some enterprise sobriety (fewer compliance checkboxes, no SLA below Enterprise, community-first support) for a faster, more joyful developer loop and finer-grained billing. Compared with Fly, it hides infrastructure rather than exposing it. It has become the default for hackathon projects, indie SaaS and internal tools where iteration speed is the whole game.

Verdict: the most fun you can have deploying a backend in 2026. Keep an eye on the meter, set spending caps, and Railway rewards you with a workflow the bigger platforms still cannot match.

  • Bills compute per second: RAM about $10/GB-month, vCPU about $20/month
  • Pro plan charges per workspace, not per seat: unlimited members for $20/mo

Frequently asked questions

Is Railway free to use?

Barely. The Free plan includes $1 of usage a month with services capped at 1 vCPU and 512 MB RAM, suitable for a small bot or webhook. Real projects start on Hobby at $5/mo, which includes $5 of usage.

How do I stop Railway from overcharging me?

Set a workspace usage limit and budget alerts in settings. Because billing is per-second and per-resource, right-sizing services and fixing memory leaks translates directly into a lower invoice.

Bottom line

Railway makes deploying a database-backed app feel like a design tool: drag, click, shipped. Usage-based billing rewards efficient apps and punishes leaky ones, so it suits builders who like watching their metrics.
