Our Squarespace review
Squarespace built its brand on design, and twenty years in, that is still the honest pitch. Its template library is smaller than Wix's but dramatically more consistent: every design is professionally art-directed, mobile output is handled automatically, and the Fluid Engine grid editor gives real drag-and-drop freedom without letting you break the layout. If your site is your portfolio, your restaurant or your personal brand, nothing else looks this good this fast.
The 2025 plan refresh moved to Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced tiers, all with unmetered storage and bandwidth and all able to sell. Basic at $16 a month on annual billing carries a 2% transaction fee on store sales; Core at $23 drops that to zero for physical goods and is the plan most owners should buy. Digital products and memberships carry their own fee ladder (7% on Basic down to 0% on Advanced), which matters a lot if you sell courses. Annual billing includes a free domain for year one; monthly billing costs roughly a third more.
The flexibility trade-off is real and intentional. Squarespace decides how far you can push a design, and its plugin ecosystem is a fraction of the app markets at Wix or WordPress. Developers can inject custom code, but the platform fights genuinely custom builds. That constraint is precisely why Squarespace sites rarely look bad, and why agencies hand them to clients who will edit their own content.
Lock-in is milder than Wix but still significant. Squarespace exports basic pages and blog posts to WordPress XML, but product catalogs, member areas, scheduling data and anything built with newer blocks stay behind. Treat the export as a partial escape hatch, not portability.
Performance sits comfortably mid-pack: Fastly-fronted hosting keeps global load times respectable, though image-heavy templates need discipline to score well on Core Web Vitals. Support is 24/7 by email with weekday live chat, consistently rated among the best in the category, and the platform now bundles useful extras such as Squarespace AI copy drafting and per-plan AI credits.
Choose Squarespace when appearance is the point and your commerce needs are straightforward. Choose something more open when you know you will want plugins, complex integrations or a future migration path.

Frequently asked questions
Can I move a Squarespace site to WordPress?
Partially. Squarespace exports pages and blog posts as WordPress-compatible XML, but store products, memberships, scheduling and most design elements do not transfer.
Does Squarespace have a free plan?
No. There is a 14-day free trial with no credit card required, after which you must pick a paid plan to keep the site online.
