WordPress.com Review
WordPress.com pairs Automattic's bulletproof WP Cloud infrastructure with genuinely unmetered traffic, but the full WordPress experience only starts at the Business tier - budget for that plan and it is a strong, fuss-free home.

Our WordPress.com review
WordPress.com is Automattic's hosted version of WordPress, run by the company co-founded by WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg. It sits on WP Cloud, the purpose-built platform that also powers Pressable, so the infrastructure under even the cheapest plan is the same one serving some of the largest WordPress deployments anywhere.
The plan structure is the thing to understand before buying. Personal and Premium are closer to a website builder than a hosting account: you get Automattic's themes, block editor and a curated feature set, but you cannot install third-party plugins or themes. The full WordPress ecosystem - the plugin directory, custom themes, SFTP, SSH, WP-CLI and staging - unlocks at the Business plan. Over the years the company has restructured these tiers more than once, briefly collapsing everything into a single Pro plan in 2022 before returning to the familiar ladder, so double-check current plan contents rather than relying on an old review.
What every tier shares is traffic handling that embarrasses the visit-metered competition. There are no visit counters, no overage invoices and burst scaling is automatic; a viral post costs you nothing. Storage allocations are also honest - 50 GB on Business dwarfs the 10 to 15 GB typical of premium managed rivals at the same price.
Pricing is straightforward if you commit annually: Personal at $4 a month, Premium at $8, Business at $25 and Commerce at $45, each including a free domain for the first year. Monthly billing roughly doubles those numbers, which is one of the steeper annual-versus-monthly gaps in the industry.
The trade-offs are structural rather than quality issues. Sites below Business live inside Automattic's conventions, some server-level controls never appear at any tier, and support is chat and email with Happiness Engineers rather than phone. Agencies and developers who want root-adjacent control should look at Pressable or Pantheon instead.
For a blogger, small business or store owner who wants WordPress without ever thinking about hosting mechanics, the Business plan is one of the most complete packages sold: unmetered traffic, real plugin freedom, staging, daily backups and a burst-proof platform for $25 a month.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install plugins on WordPress.com?
Only on the Business plan ($25/mo annual) and above. Free, Personal and Premium plans are limited to WordPress.com's built-in features and curated plugin set.
Is WordPress.com the same as WordPress.org?
No. WordPress.org is the free software you host anywhere; WordPress.com is Automattic's hosted service built on that software. On the Business plan and above the two are functionally very close.
Bottom line
WordPress.com pairs Automattic's bulletproof WP Cloud infrastructure with genuinely unmetered traffic, but the full WordPress experience only starts at the Business tier - budget for that plan and it is a strong, fuss-free home.
